The Steward Lab in the UH Manoa Department of Oceanography has a research opportunity for an undergraduate student this summer through the McNair Program ( http://www.hawaii.edu/diversity/McNair/how-to-apply.html), which will provide a stipend to students who meet the following qualifications:

– U.S. Citizenship or permanent U.S. residency
– A 2.7+ minimum cumulative University of Hawai’i GPA
– Minimum junior class standing
– Intend to pursue a Ph.D.; students in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering or math are strongly urged to apply. This program is not open to students intending to pursue professional degrees such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, management or law.
– Be from the first generation within the immediate family to complete a baccalaureate degree and from a low-income background (as defined by the U.S. Department of Education); and/or be a member of a group historically underrepresented in higher education (African American, Hispanic, Native American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, Filipino, Samoan, Pacific Islander)
– Able to participate in a full-time summer research internship
– Able to complete a directed research seminar during academic year

The research opportunity is to work in the state-of the art C-MORE Hale building, studying the growth characteristics of a human pathogen, Vibrio vulnificus. This bacterium infects people and causes life-threatening disease. We have isolated strains of the bacteria from the Ala Wai Canal, here in Honolulu, and are working to characterize them. We will fully train undergraduate students, however a background in microbiology, biological sciences or environmental science would be helpful. Work would include laboratory experiments, with the possibly of a field component.
