The Steward Lab in the UH Manoa Department of Oceanography has a research opportunity for an undergraduate student this summer through the McNair Program ( http://www.hawaii.edu/diversity/McNair/how-to-apply.html), which will provide a stipend to students who meet the following qualifications:

– U.S. Citizenship or permanent U.S. residency
– A 2.7+ minimum cumulative University of Hawai’i GPA
– Minimum junior class standing
– Intend to pursue a Ph.D.; students in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering or math are strongly urged to apply. This program is not open to students intending to pursue professional degrees such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, management or law.
– Be from the first generation within the immediate family to complete a baccalaureate degree and from a low-income background (as defined by the U.S. Department of Education); and/or be a member of a group historically underrepresented in higher education (African American, Hispanic, Native American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, Filipino, Samoan, Pacific Islander)
– Able to participate in a full-time summer research internship
– Able to complete a directed research seminar during academic year

The research opportunity is to work in the state-of the art C-MORE Hale building, studying the growth characteristics of a human pathogen, Vibrio vulnificus. This bacterium infects people and causes life-threatening disease. We have isolated strains of the bacteria from the Ala Wai Canal, here in Honolulu, and are working to characterize them. We will fully train undergraduate students, however a background in microbiology, biological sciences or environmental science would be helpful. Work would include laboratory experiments, with the possibly of a field component.

This posting is a holding spot for applicants that desire an Internship with Layton Construction for 2013.

We are interested in third year students in a Construction Management/Civil/or similar Eng. program at a university.

Our intern for Layton Construction aids and assists the Project Engineers, Project Managers and Superintendents on construction projects.

Commercial construction experience will be preferred.


 • Becomes familiar with the assigned project plans and specifications in order to assist the engineer with the project.

• Process RFI’s, Submittals (collects from subcontractors and distributes to architects/engineers/consultants).

• Assists in creating pay applications

• Distributes drawings and communicates information to subcontractors

• Collects and organizes bid information

• Prepares Project Review packages

• Assists in publishing weekly progress reports for assigned projects

• Completes follow up for receipt, review, and distribution of information required for project construction.

• Researches construction problems.

• Updates project schedules as needed.

• Assists in bidding and in developing scope of work for trade contractors.

• Follows up for review and approval for shop drawings, samples, material lists, etc.

• Maintains logs, reflecting the status of shop drawings, requests for clarification, change requests, and proposal requests.

• Assist in ensuring appropriate materials are available for the preparation of the project


Required: Two to three years college.

Required: Mobility – Our interns can be assigned to projects as needed: Our projects are located throughout the United States.

Our Salt Lake City office is listed on this posting as the corporate base. This may NOT be the location the Intern is assigned.

Three years of Construction Management curriculum.
Commercial construction experience will be preferred.
