Social Science Research Institute. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) and the Division of Conservation and R…esource Enforcement (DOCARE), Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

Monthly Salary RANGE: $3,222-3,583/Mon.

Duties: Provide project planning, research, training and evaluation related to the Makai Watch Strategic Plan. Research and prepare background documents. Investigate and evaluate a framework for drafting and reviewing marine resource rules as part of community stewardship plans. Train Makai Watch communities on program standards, effective communication, and protocols.

Primary Qualifications: Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Planning, or a related field.

Experience: Three (3) or more years of work experience in conservation, community development, or other relevant field, and working with a variety of stakeholders in Hawaii, including communities and government agencies. A Master’s Degree in Natural Resource Management, Planning, Public Policy, Justice Administration, or related field can be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.

Abil/Know/Skills: Understanding of the resource management landscape of Hawaii. Ability to speak and write clearly, including the ability to analyze and clearly explain data, draft proposals, and draft reports requiring minimal review and editing. Demonstrated proficiency with highly detailed work. Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced, flexible environment without intensive supervision. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office package; Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to be a positive team player. Ability to remain clam under pressure while effectively meeting deadlines and ability to be flexible with changing aspects and needs of job. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Physical/Medical Requirements: Ability to travel to the neighbor islands (including car rentals) for meetings at short notice as needed (possibly 15% of time).

SECONDARY Qualifications: Knowledge of current trends and strategies in conservation enforcement and community-based resource management.

Talk Story with DLNR

DLNR invites fishermen to an informal “talk story” session with DLNR Chairperson William J. Aila, Jr. at 6 p.m. the last Thursday of every month in the DLNR Boardroom on the first floor at 1151 Punchbowl St., Honolulu.

The next meeting is Thursday, May 30. For this upcoming meeting, Dr. Jeff Drazen, UH Manoa Oceanography will be presenting his teams monitoring results of the Bottomfish Restricte…d Fishing Areas (BRFAs). This research is being conducted under contract by the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) to provide resource managers with scientific data on the management areas.

DLNR is hosting locations on the neighbor islands to provide an opportunity to view the presentation and participate in a question and answer “talk story” session to follow the half hour presentation.
