I.      Background
The Charles Darwin Foundation, in collaboration with the Galapagos National
Park Directorate, is leading the project Galapagos 360 in association with
Google and the Catlin Seaview Survey. During 2013, we collected a large
dataset of land images using the Google Trekker street view technology and
underwater images using the SVII technology developed by the Catlin Seaview
Survey. The aim of this pilot project was to evaluate the potential use of
these technologies for scientific purposes.

II.     Job description
The Image Analysis Expert will be responsible for developing methodologies
that facilitate the analysis of 360 panoramic images and generate apps for
the use of these images for scientific purposes.

III.    Activities and responsibilities

1.      Document the Google Street View and Catlin Seaview Survey technology.
2.      Manage the image database collected during 2013 and during future
3.      Collaborate with the Principal Investigator on the development of
specific research lines.
4.      Produce analytic tools for the images that allow the development of
scientifically sound information for ongoing research projects.
5.      Develop apps that allow the comparison of field surveys with the 360
6.      Promote the development of existing apps like Darwin for a Day
(www.darwinforaday.org) with the incorporation of image analysis and results
of the investigations.
7.      Develop national and international collaborations to improve image
analysis capabilities.

IV.     Minimum requirements
1.      Postgraduate level in computer science or natural sciences
(biology/ecology) with image analysis specialization.
2.      Proficiency in the use of image analysis and video software (ImageJ, Panini).
3.      Proficiency in the use of advance statistical software (R, GRASS, Matlab).
4.      Advance user of Geographical Information Systems (ArcGIS, Quantum).
5.      Familiar in the use of remote sensing techniques.
6.      Interest in the use of technology and citizen science for scientific
7.      Interested in environmental issues and the conservation of the Galapagos
8.      Fluent in English and Spanish.
