The University of Hamburg invites applications for a Research Associate / Post-doc m/f
(wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in in einem post-doc-Arbeitsverhältnis) with a strong background in Soil Science or Terrestrial Geoscience.

Project background:
SASSCAL, the “Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive
Land Management”, is a joint initiative between Angola, Botswana, Germany, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia, responding to the challenges of global change (http:// http://www.sasscal.org; also see under “News”). Germany, in close cooperation with the African partner countries, initiated the implementation of a regional competence centre in Southern Africa. Science and research offer proactive approaches to deal with current projections of global change impacts. The research aims to identify appropriate interventions in the fields of climate, water, forestry, agriculture and biodiversity.

Areas of Responsibility:
The successful candidate will complement the SASSCAL scientific team at the Institute of Soil Science. The Research Associate will work in the field of global change impacts on soil quality in sub-Saharan ecosystems in the project SASSCAL “Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management”. She/He will be responsible for the conception and realization of field work and laboratory experiments on soil quality esp. on soil water balances and organic matter research in the SASSCAL region. She/He will support and supervise students and technicians and will work in an interdisciplinary scientific team of German and African partners.

Requirements:
We expect an academic degree in terrestrial geosciences, ecology or in a related discipline plus an excellent doctorate degree and the following skills:
• Profound knowledge in soil science,
• Proven expertise in soil water dynamics and/or soil organic matter research,
• Experience with the conception and realization of field and laboratory experiments,
• Proficiency in working with large datasets, statistical analysis, mathematical programming and GIS-analysis,
• Demonstrated knowledge and organizational skills in interdisciplinary international research projects and project management,
• Ability to conduct independent work in an international team,
• Strong oral and written communication skills in English
• A good publication record,
• Motivation for extensive travelling in Sothern Africa, potentially also including longer stays,
• Category B of driving license is essential.
Research experience within the SASSCAL region is advantageous.

General Information: Payment is according to salary group E 13 TV-L. The position is offered for 32 month, starting as soon as possible (see also § 2 of the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Law (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz)). The position calls for 39 hours per week.
